On May 27 and 28, 2025, the 4th consortium meeting of our Horizon Europe project “BalticSeaH2” took place in Tallinn (Estonia). The consortium of over 40 partners from 9 countries met to discuss the current project status and the progress of the individual work packages. In addition, all project participants were given an insight into the respective hydrogen economies of the partner countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The day before, on May 26, the BalticSeaH2 consortium visited the 1100 MWh heat storage facility being built at the Väo energy complex in Tallinn. Here Utilitas, the largest producer of renewable energy in Estonia, is building a facility that can harmonize daily energy production, increase the security of supply of the district heating system and reduce the use of fossil fuels. During the 90-minute tour, the consortium visited the plant, including the electrolyzer, hydrogen refueling station and thermal energy storage. It was very interesting for the project participants, who regularly carry out study visits to hydrogen value chains within the Baltic Sea region as part of the BalticSeaH2 project, to see how the plant is constructed and how the heat side stream is utilised.
