The Energy Steering Committee of the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock was initiated in August 2022 by the IWEN Institute, among others. Strategic activities to establish a hub for green energy sources in Rostock's seaport ("Rostock Energy Port" strategy) are the origin of the idea of coordinating the emerging projects in the energy industry and the projects already underway.
The transformation of the port with its coal-fired power plant into an industrial center for the production, import and on-site use of renewable energy presents challenges, but also great opportunities for the region. The first industrial projects have been initiated. The region's enormous green energy potential is attracting further industrial energy infrastructure projects to Rostock. These energy industry projects form the basis of the steering committee's work. In the short and medium term, the aim is to provide regular, active and consolidated support. To this end, they have been defined as core and satellite projects.
The energy transition is also still highly dynamic and new challenges are constantly emerging. On the other hand, there are also a wide range of development opportunities in the course of the economic transformation. The committee aims to identify these and make targeted use of them for sustainable location development.
The Energy Steering Committee is chaired and moderated by IWEN Managing Director Dr. Tschullik. It meets monthly and supports and manages local energy industry projects in the Rostock region. The 10 members coordinate the joint approach to important settlement, expansion or infrastructure projects. Guests, for example from the German Bundestag, the state government or future project partners, also take part on a topic-related basis. As many projects also have an impact on the Rostock region, the steering committee was expanded in November 2023 to include the district of Rostock and the Rostock Region Planning Association.
